The BCA’s photographic competition 2025
The Burpham Community Association’s photographic competition ran over summer and early Autumn this year to capture the best of Burpham.

One of the rewards of extending the competition into autumn was that the season offered more warm low light and the changing colours of the leaves.
It is not perhaps surprising that many photographs featured Burpham’s large trees and many wildflowers. The Riverside Nature Reserve is clearly a favourite haunt of our photographers! Several photographs featured the mirror-like surface of the River Wey to produce dreamy images. Animals featured too: a kestrel, a spider and a bumble bee made memorable appearances.
One of the rewards of extending the competition into autumn was that the season offered more warm low light and the changing colours of the leaves.
Some photographers strived to capture a different side of Burpham. For example, we looked closely at light falling on a pavement, a bus stop and the wine shop window. The last of these was commended by the judges for its creativity, and for being the only semi-abstract photograph in the competition.

First prize went to Kevin Appleby for his beautifully lit trees (above left). There were two commendations: one for the abstract vision of the wine shop window by Dylan Thomas and the other for the perfectly mirrored tree in Lauren Holden’s entry.
The BCA is now planning a new competition in 2026.
