May & June 2025 update from our local councillors

Jane Tyson and George Potter at the Burpham Community Hub.

Local councillors George Potter and Jane Tyson write their regular update for Burpham residents:

Ted Mayne

We are sad to report the death of former local councillor Ted Mayne, who passed away in March.

Ted represented Burpham for 12 years, from 2003 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. He lived his whole life in Guildford, most of it in Burpham, was a devoted friend to our community. He was an active member of St Saviour’s church and supported many national and local charities alongside his late wife Marion. He will be sorely missed by many across Burpham, and we will forever be grateful for his friendship and support and for his life of service.

Burpham Community Hub

Sutherland Memorial Hall is now available for hire by the public when not being used by the nursery. Booking enquiries can be made to: burphamcommunityhub@gmail.com

Community Cafe now open!

Come for Coffee | Donate a Cake | Sign up to volunteer

Barista Training available on the day (email burphamcommunityhub@gmail.com to book).

A new pop-up community cafe for Burpham is now open on Saturdays from 9am to 12pm at the hall in Sutherland Memorial Park. Coffees and cakes are very affordably priced and well support the Community Hub’s goal of hosting an outdoor community cinema event in September 2025. Pour yourself a cuppa, maybe donate a cake, and stay tuned for updates!

Drop In To See Us!

Our monthly drop-ins are still on the first Saturday of each month, 10.00am to 11.30am, but have now moved to the pop-up café in the park (see above). Whether you have something to discuss or just fancy a chat over tea or coffee, we’d love to see you.

Have your say:

Our councils are being abolished

Under the government’s programme of reorganising local government, both Guildford Borough Council and Surrey County Council are set to be abolished in 2027. They are set to be replaced by a new unitary council (one council with responsibility for all services) which will cover both Guildford and neighbouring areas such as Woking and Godalming.

At the moment it is still to be decided whether there will be two or three unitary councils in Surrey, and we want you to have your say!

You can view details of the proposals and let the council know which option you prefer. The survey is open until 20th April: shapingsurreysfuture.commonplace.is

General Update

As always there’s more going on across Guildford than we can possibly fit in this update. To keep up to date with all the important local issues you can sign up to the council’s ‘About Guildford’ newsletter here: guildford.gov.uk/aboutguildford
